{"id":5451,"date":"2021-01-08T11:34:28","date_gmt":"2021-01-08T19:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therecreationalgolfer.com\/blog\/?p=5451"},"modified":"2021-01-19T19:09:10","modified_gmt":"2021-01-20T03:09:10","slug":"sorenstam-and-player-accept-presidential-medal-of-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therecreationalgolfer.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/sorenstam-and-player-accept-presidential-medal-of-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"Sorenstam and Player Accept Presidential Medal of Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a ceremony yesterday at the White House, Gary Player and Annika Sorenstam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/christinebrennan\/2021\/01\/07\/medal-freedom-annika-sorenstam-gary-player-shame-golf-honor\/6585275002\/\">accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Trump<\/a> in a private, secret ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>How this is even possible given the events of the previous day is almost impossible to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you could say that both of the recipients are foreign-born (Sorenstam is a naturalized American citizen)  so the assault of the United States Capitol, fomented by the very president they would be seeing, doesn&#8217;t register the way it otherwise might.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they could say, <a href=\"https:\/\/therecreationalgolfer.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/the-saudi-international\/\">like Justin Rose said<\/a> when he went to Saudi Arabia in the wake of the state-sponsored murder of Jamal Khashoggi, &#8220;I&#8217;m not a politician.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t know yet why they went to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>But whatever excuse they come up with won&#8217;t be good enough. These two people have blackened their reputation and their legacy in my eyes forever. <\/p>\n<p>What they did was inexcusable.
