Bob’s Living Golf Book-April 2019 Edition

The April 2019 edition of Bob’s Living Golf Book is now online.

The new text is in blue, and now that the weather is letting me play again, I have been inspired to write lots of new stuff. I hope you like it.

  1. Thank you for all you do! I’ve always been confused on short pitches as to whether I should use the bounce and really try to slide the club along the ground or just make a half swing with my hands ahead of my club face at impact. It seems to me, if you are going to try to use the bounce, you need to open the club face to avoid digging into the ground before you hit the ball. Your thoughts?

    1. Paul,
Sliding the club under the ball instead of hitting with a more descending trajectory gives you more control of impact, which is why I recommend it. Take several practice swings to feel the sole of the club brushing the ground. You don’t dig into the ground when you make these practice strokes, so you won’t dig when hitting the ball if you use the same stroke.

Bounce isn’t a factor unless you have a tight lie or the wedge has too much bounce. I have a 60° wedge with just 4 degrees of bounce expressly for tight lies. My 56° and 52° have 8 degrees of bounce, and I never have problems with them because from the distances they are used there is always a sufficient cushion of grass underneath the ball.
